Thursday 19th March – ski ***** - Le Chevrerie – sunny with light
winds.
Had a good night at our spot by the Chapel in Le Chevrerie and didn’t
have any problems from the campervan that arrived late last night, he had
parked a nice distance from us:) There was a good frost this morning but it
looked very promising for a day’s skiing with wall-to-wall sunshine and
light airs! Mag read and did her words games while I dozed but I did get up
to take a few reflections in the little Lac. Then Mag made breakfast while
I packed a picnic and we drove up the road to the ski station around 9.30
and it was very quiet! Mag went to buy two 5-hour lift passes for the
bargain price of 59 Euros while I unloaded the skis from the top box. To
our amazement everything fitted as we waddled over to catch the lift at 10
o clock! The red run back down was very threadbare and we discovered it was
closed but that didn’t stop people coming down it in the afternoon! We
managed to exit the chairlift with no problems, sadly the green run back
was also closed so we continued up a long button lift to the Col des Follys
and took the blue run down just to get the feel of things, Mag seemed to
take to it like a duck to water but I was having a few problems as my right
leg just didn’t want to turn which made things hard! Back up at the Col
we decided to go for it and drop down the best run here, the long red, The
Follys, it is just the best, stunning scenery, quiet and it leads to a long
button lift which after a steep red leads to the bubble lift at the bottom
of St. Jean D’ Aulps which is actually quite near to Morzine which is why
you get to hear a few English voices! I did have a good fall and slide on a
icy bit and actually had a job to stand up and I had to side slip to the
bubble where Mag was waiting, I was not enjoying things at the moment! The
bubble takes you up slowly to the Le Plateau 1500 and we actually headed to
a restaurant with brilliant views all round, Mag had a hot chocolate and I
actually had a beer and very nice it was too, we had a very relaxing time
enjoying the warm sunshine and taking in the mountain scenery, just
breathtaking, we have really missed the mountains! We had a lovely chat to
another English pensioner; in fact, there are loads of old people here so
we felt right at home! Well rested we thought we better try again and took
the TSF Des Tetes chairlift which takes you to the top and found the most
wonderful blue down were I really discovered my ski legs again and things
vastly improved, we liked it so much we did it loads of times, we even
tried the red run and survived, the snow was so good and the pistes were
very quiet, just perfect! Then getting hungry we stopped at a picnic bench
with brilliant views down to a chapel in the Villag of De Graydon with
eagles soaring overhead, top lunch too! Then at two with only an hour of
our lift pass lift we dropped down into the next bowl with stunning views
of the Roc D’Enfer and took the chairlift up to the Col de Graydon, we
had enough time for one more blue before heading back to the Col for the
start of the very long red that leads back to Le Chevrerie. That was
knackering as we were both shattered but we made it back to the van safely,
what a top day and we might do it all again tomorrow?
